How to find which theme a Shopify store uses, by hand
Every Shopify storefront that uses an Online Store theme prints that theme in its page source, as a small JSON object. It takes under a minute to read.
-
Open the store and view the page source
Open any page of the store. Right-click and choose View Page Source, or press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac).
-
Search for Shopify.theme
Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and search for Shopify.theme. Every Shopify storefront prints a line like Shopify.theme = {"name":"Summer 2026","schema_name":"Dawn","schema_version":"15.2.0","theme_store_id":887,...}.
-
Read schema_name, not name
name is what the merchant called their copy, and it is often a date or the brand. schema_name is the theme the copy was built on, and schema_version is its version.
-
Check theme_store_id
A number means the theme was installed from the Shopify Theme Store: 887 is Dawn. null means the theme was uploaded as a file or built in-house, even when schema_name reads Dawn.
-
Find the theme
Search the Shopify Theme Store (themes.shopify.com) for the schema_name. If it is not there, the theme is custom or sold elsewhere.

What a theme detector cannot tell you
- Which edits the merchant made to the code. Two stores on Dawn 15 can look very different.
- The theme of a headless store. Hydrogen and other headless storefronts have no Online Store theme.
- The seller of a theme bought outside the Theme Store. The page names the theme, not where it was bought.
Everything you need to know
How the theme detector works, and what it cannot see.
How do I find out which theme a Shopify store uses?
Paste the store's URL into the theme detector on this page. It reads the store's Shopify.theme object live and shows the theme name, the theme it was built on and its version. To check by hand, view the page source, search for Shopify.theme and read schema_name.
Is the Shopify theme detector free?
Yes. You get 5 lookups a day without an account, and 50 a day with a free account. The result also lists the store's apps.
Why does the theme name look like a date or the store's name?
Merchants rename their copy of a theme, for example "Summer 2026" or "Brand 2.0". The theme it was built on stays in schema_name, and the detector shows it as "Built on".
What does "not installed from the Theme Store" mean?
The store's theme has no Theme Store ID. It was uploaded as a file, bought from another marketplace or built in-house. Some uploaded copies still read Dawn in schema_name, because they started from Dawn's code.
Why does a store show no theme?
Headless stores (built with Hydrogen or another framework) do not use an Online Store theme, so there is no Shopify.theme to read. A store that blocks automated visits cannot be read live either; we then show the theme from our last crawl, with its date.
Can I find every store that uses a given theme?
Not with the free tool: it checks one store at a time. The one-time CSV has a theme column for every store we track.
Need the theme of every store?
The one-time CSV lists the theme, apps and contacts of every Shopify store we track.
